Playing with the trial version showed the immense network traffic when I reloaded the basic data table page (about 300kb).
The traffic consists mainly of huge ammount of javascript which IMHO should be loaded once and cashed in the browser.
Is it a price I have to pay for a Ajax beauty or is there a way to somehow work around this?

It would be helpfull for us to know how did you measured this javascript traffic and also what is the configuration of your dataTable?

I used a Data Table Basic from your demo and IEInspector Http Analyzer for mesuring the traffic.
